High School: Life After Bridge
Bridge Boston is proud to educate our scholars from pre-kindergarten all the way through 8th grade, and to support their continuing education beyond our walls. After all, our mission challenges us to empower our scholars to, “achieve their greatest potential in high school and beyond.”
Our first generation of Bridge Boston Alumni have just graduated high school: many beginning their first year of college at places like Howard University, UMass Dartmouth College, Syracuse University, Curry College, and Framingham State University.
High School Placement at Bridge
Bridge recognizes that every 8th grade student's needs regarding high school are completely unique. Every Bridge student is assigned a High School Placement Advisor that works with them, their families, and their needs for the foreseeable high school choice process. Managing research, applications, accounts, interviews, financial aid, and more can be extremely overwhelming, and our High School Placement advisors work closely with our students to ensure they find the best fit.
The Bridge Boston High School Placement program is initiated at the end of 7th grade. Families fill out surveys to share their interests and needs regarding their student’s futures, and later attend a workshop regarding several local options, including:
Charter High Schools
Public BPS High Schools (including Pilot Schools and Trade Schools)
Private Religious High Schools
Private, Independent High Schools
Exam Schools
Our High School Placement Counselors create customized lists for every single rising 8th grader that include a combination of different types of schools.
For 45 minutes every Wednesday, our 8th grade students work with their High School Advisors. In September, this mostly includes researching their options: from website scavenger hunts, to field trips, to guest speakers, our students narrow down their pools to their application lists. October through February is application season, meaning our advisors help scholars set up accounts, practice interviews, edit essays, and prepare for testing. Come February, our advisors focus on Financial Aid applications with families and students.
Our Advisors are counselors and teachers who have built relationships with our Bridge students over the years: they are invested in our students' success.
In the past, the majority of our students have attended local high schools including Cristo Rey, Neighborhood House, Match, New Heights Charter, and Cathedral High School. Other students have gone on to Boston Arts Academy, Meridian Academy, Madison Park High, Boston Collegiate, Roxbury Prep Hyde Park, and more.
Bridge Boston Alumni
Being full-service, it is of utmost importance to us to ensure our scholars are prepared not only for school, but for the life ahead of them. Every single Alumni self-identified in our survey that they are on-track to finish high school in 4 years, and since beginning high school, over 80% of BBCS alumni indicated that they have taken on at least one leadership role in a club, sports team, job, or volunteer position. Bridge prepares scholars to not only succeed, but lead!
At Bridge, we have developed a school culture of intentional community that keeps students supported and our alumni connected. Keeping in touch with our Alumni is important to Bridge Boston because we are keeping our community connected. 94% of our Alumni agreed they were proud to have attended Bridge Boston Charter School, showing our community continues to impact our students even after they leave. We also know that many of our 8th grade scholars will be greeted by their fellow Jaguars at their new high schools every year.
Here’s what one BBCS family have to say about Bridge and our High School Placement Program: “Bridge Boston has been great to my family since day one. I always get the support needed for my family. The Bridge Faculty prioritizes each scholar's and family's needs to ensure academic and social success.
My scholar is getting ready to transition into high school, and I am in awe of how supportive The Bridge Teachers are with my son. We recently visited a school fair to inquire about different school offerings. Three Bridge Teachers supported our scholars at the school fair. Ms. G joined us at each school my son Donan was interested in attending for high school. Ms. G helped us by asking the essential questions to learn if the school has what my son needs to excel in his chosen school.
The same feeling I had about Bridge when my son entered Kindergarten as if his school cared and loved everyone as a family, is the same feeling I have about him leaving Bridge, knowing that my son's success is as critical as if he were entering Bridge for the first time.
